To L.
I stay out late in the dark woodlands
scouring through slushy mire -
looking for a bright bold yellow leaf
blazing like an enraged fire.
Each maple leaf - starry and creased -
reflects late autumn's sun;
the leaves of gold now hanging loose
are falling one by one.
I keep an eye out for the perfect leaf
among the gilded ground;
nature’s raiment, worn to perfection,
radiates beauty all around.
The freshly fallen with flamboyant hues
revel in life's prime stages,
while those that fade foretell our fate,
preach wisdom of the ages.
Together, they weave rich tapestries,
a royal garment for the earth;
my handpicked litter of finest leaves
fills me with joy and mirth.
I have an abundance of matured leaves
they're all beautiful to see;
but the loveliest of all that I have seen
is the one you picked for me.
