Let There be Light

I have always been fascinated by fireflies. One of my dreams is to visit a woodland area that glows in the dark because of a series of complex chemical activity in the light organs of fireflies. The google images and photographs of this phenomena have left me intrigued and I cannot help but marvel at another one of nature’s miracles. For now, I will free my imagination and express my age-old love for fireflies through this light-hearted poem.

One evening when the sun hung low
and sparkling round orbs met my eyes,
in the amber woods, I saw there gleamed
a jar of glinting fireflies.

With restless wings, they spun around,
who trapped them all, I did not know,
in darkness, they beamed brighter still –
a luminous pool of golden glow.

Ancient spirits reveling inside the jar –
I had truly longed to take them home;
yet, unscrewing the lid, I set them free
into the distant starlit dome.

More brilliant than all the silvery stars,
how they twinkled in and out of sight!
Enlivening the darksome lonely woods
were tiny spheres of ghostly light.

One small bold orb came near and near;
it was floating straight into my chest.
The same night, I dreamt happy dreams,
its kindly light had had me blest.

I was a little firefly in that dream,
flickering like those that I had freed;
all through the night, I, too, burned bright –
a guiding light to those in need.

  1. This is very beautiful, Leah, very deep. And your chosen artwork compliments your poetry perfectly. Much to my regret, we have no fireflies in the UK. Our nearest equivalent would be the glow-worm, a sort of luminous larvae which children would collect in jars, beautiful and increasingly rare. Well done.

    1. Thank you so much! I’m not sure if I’ve seen a glow-worm but they sure look pretty too. It looks like collecting and storing them in a jar is a universal experience for children worldwide. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead.
